Uber and Momenta plan to begin testing Level 4 autonomous vehicles in Munich in 2026. Level 4 refers to fully driverless vehicles that operate without a safety driver, within a defined geographic area. The tests will initially be conducted with safety personnel on board and later proceed fully autonomously.
Munich was deliberately chosen as the launch city due to its unique blend of automotive heritage, innovative prowess, and a thriving tech ecosystem, thus creating the perfect environment to introduce autonomous mobility to Europe’s roads. If successful, other cities could follow suit, ushering in a new era of urban transportation.
Momenta is already active in robotaxi operations and supplies advanced driver assistance systems to manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Over 400,000 vehicles worldwide are already equipped with Momenta’s technology. Through its partnership with Uber, this AI-driven robotaxi technology will debut on a global platform outside China for the first time, showcasing its scalability across Europe.
