Trump Media Under Pressure: Weak Results, but Hopes for a Turnaround
The publicly traded Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT), whose largest individual shareholder is U.S. President Donald Trump with a stake of around 41.5%, reported a significant loss in the second quarter of 2026. The company, best known for its social media platform Truth Social, posted a net loss of approximately $238 million over the three-month period, generating revenue of just $1.7 million.
In response to the results, the company plans to scale back its expansion into new business areas and refocus on its core platform, Truth Social. Particular attention is being given to Truth API, a controversial and heavily criticized service that provides trading firms with early access to posts by the U.S. president. According to CEO Kevin McGurn, the service currently has 10 customers, each paying between $60,000 and $100,000 per month. Launched in August, Truth API was not yet generating revenue during the second quarter and is therefore not reflected in the Q2 figures.
The company had recently expanded beyond its core social media business into areas such as cryptocurrencies and online betting. Its foray into crypto, however, resulted in significant unrealized losses on its Bitcoin holdings. TMTG has now put its planned partnership and initiatives with Crypto.com on hold, while also abandoning plans to integrate an online betting and prediction market into Truth Social.
Since its stock market debut in March 2024, when shares briefly surged to around $79, DJT has suffered a dramatic decline in value. The stock now trades at approximately $9, representing a loss of roughly 89% from its peak.
Experts remain divided on the outlook. On the one hand, the company’s extremely low revenue and declining monthly traffic to Truth Social provide little fundamental justification for a higher valuation. On the other hand, Truth API could open the door to a scalable B2B business with potentially higher margins and greater long-term value than Truth Social’s traditional advertising-based model.
